The TV-TMG User Group Studies Evidence Explained

We studied Elizabeth Shown Mills' amazing Evidence Explained for more than two years, and we still return to it frequently. This study culminated in our book, Source Templates for the Master Genealogist, which is available for purchase on Lulu.com.

The blog accompanying this two-year project is Exploring Evidence Explained with the TV-TMG User Group. Blog posts include some of the major discussion points that arose during our meetings. As we progressed in the study, we moved most of the discussion points into our book, and blog posts were not created as often.

The following files were created during our meetings and are for the use of our members only. Please don't pass them on to others without the express permission of each file's author. Also note that these may not match similar citation templates in our book. Those in the book are the end product of our two-year study. These files document that study. They are useful, but note that custom source elements might conflict with your own custom source elements and with those files that accompany our book.

Just a reminder: Here is the link to an explanation of these files and how to use them: An Explanation of Our Evidence Explained Files.

Our TMG Database - January 2012

This current (January 2012) TMG database includes several new source templates as well as the two report configurations created at our January meeting. (Each month, we uploaded the database at that time. The present webpage does not include those month-by-month updates. This was our final TV-TMG database when we concluded the formal study of Evidence Explained. It is a version 8 database.

This is a PDF describing a general online database citation - not a file created at our meeting. ☺

Files created at our August 2011 Meeting

I have uploaded the Excel files we use to track our custom source elements to a separate page. I have corrected a lot of the irregularities in these files, but it would be very helpful if those of you also tracking the custom source elements would verify my corrections.

This is a list of the templates that have been added or revised. Feel free to download these individually or examine the changes before making a decision to import them into your own database.

Updated Template

As requested, here is my working Excel copy of our Source Elements. Don't forget to send comments and corrections to me, Kay, and/or Duncan. Of course, this is subject to change!

Files created at our June 2011 Meeting

If you attended our last meeting, you will remember that we weren't quite satisfied with our Google Patent database template. We also discussed additions and modifications to our Template booklet.

At the end of the meeting, I agreed to reevaluate the Google Patent source; and Duncan, Kay and I agreed to continue work on the Template booklet, updating both the booklet and the database to reflect any changes. Our template reminders were woefully incomplete; we had not created examples for each of the source types in the database; and a couple of the early templates are inconsistent with decisions the group made later.

Don't forget to check the blog for comments and principles. There are two templates here. The online version places emphasis on the database; the digital image version places emphasis on the manifest image.

Files created at our November 2010 Meeting

Don't forget to check the blog for comments and principles. We're still working on land records in our Decmeber meeting - specifically bounty land warrants, homesteads, and private land claims.

Files created at our October 2010 Meeting

Don't forget to check the blog for comments and principles - and don't forget to provide more land record examples for the November meeting!

Files created at our September 2010 Meeting

See our blog for comments and principles when citing FHL/GSU microfilm and when citing church registers.

Note that we did NOT include the source type templates Kristina created in our more standard database. For those of you who wish to use some of Kristina's templates, I've included separate files for each one. These can be imported into TMG.

Some of the following templates were modified from Kristina's originals to be more compatible with the source element structure we've created so far. I couldn't come up with a compatible version for the "Cemetery Office Records" template. Importing this template will create new names for current source elements. Although it's likely that we will need to do this in the future, I would recommend holding up on this template until then.

June 2010 Files

Kay is going to be our guest presenter this month as we investigate citing books. Given all the various formats in which we now find books, these citations may surprise us!
